Raleigh Holiday Events 2026: What’s Worth Putting on the Calendar

The Triangle does the holidays well, and the season has a clear starting gun: the weekend of November 20-21, when the downtown tree lighting and the Christmas Parade land back to back.

Many families look forward to experiencing the raleigh holiday events together, making memories that last a lifetime.

Here’s what’s on the calendar, with the caveat that dates and times shift — confirm before you load the family in the car. VisitRaleigh keeps the most reliable running list.

The Opening Weekend

Downtown Raleigh Tree Lighting Celebration — Friday, November 20, roughly 5:30 to 8pm at Moore Square. Since moving to Moore Square it comes with a pop-up holiday market, live performances, vendors, and photos with Santa. Free.

The raleigh holiday events really kick off the holiday spirit in the community.

82nd Annual Raleigh Christmas Parade — Saturday, November 21, stepping off at 9:30am from Hillsborough Street and running down Fayetteville Street. It’s the largest parade of its kind between Atlanta and Washington, D.C., with marching bands, giant balloons, and a 1.4-mile route that draws tens of thousands of spectators. The Greater Raleigh Merchants Association has organized it since 1944. Free.

Attending the raleigh holiday events like the Christmas Parade is a cherished tradition for many.

Christmas at North Hills tree lighting — also Saturday, November 21, expected late afternoon at North Hills Commons. The tree runs 41 feet. It kicks off the broader Christmas at North Hills series.

Don’t miss out on the raleigh holiday events that make this season special.

Doing the tree lighting Friday night and the parade Saturday morning is about the best holiday weekend the city puts on.

The Lantern Festival

North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival in Cary runs from late November into January. Hundreds of oversized illuminated lanterns, and it’s been among the most-attended holiday events in the area for over a decade.

The North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival is one of the most exciting raleigh holiday events to attend.

It’s ticketed and it draws crowds. Worth going on a weeknight if you can.

December

Holiday Express at Pullen Park — early to mid-December. The park’s carousel and train in holiday mode, and a reliable favorite for younger kids.

Holiday Express at Pullen Park is another highlight among raleigh holiday events.

NC Symphony holiday season — runs from late November through late December.

The nc symphony holiday season adds to the variety of raleigh holiday events available.

Illuminate Art Walk on Fayetteville Street — free.

Boylan Heights ArtWalk — early December, in one of Raleigh’s historic neighborhoods.

Oakwood Candlelight Tour — the 55th annual, in Historic Oakwood. If you’ve never walked Oakwood at night in December, it’s worth doing once.

State Capitol Tree Lighting — live music and the lighting of the tree at the Capitol. Free.

Marbles Kids Museum runs holiday programming including Evening with Elves and the Gingerbread Jamboree.

Marbles Kids Museum hosts delightful raleigh holiday events that engage children and families alike.

New Hope Valley Railway’s Santa Express — weekends in December, out toward New Hill. Train rides with Santa aboard.

Around the Triangle

No matter where you go, the raleigh holiday events bring joy to everyone.

Nearly every town in Wake County does its own tree lighting, and most are free:

Light the Springs at the Holly Springs Cultural Center — early December, free. More on the town in living in Holly Springs NC.

Victorian Christmas at the Page-Walker in Cary — a Victorian-themed celebration in a historic hotel.

Wendell Wonderland and the Lake Myra Christmas Lights in Wendell — the Lake Myra display is free and has a real local following.

Wendell Wonderland is one of the fantastic raleigh holiday events that locals enjoy.

Apex and Cary both run their own Christmas parades. Check your town’s site, because the small-town versions are often more pleasant than the big one if you have small kids.

What’s Free

A genuinely long list: every tree lighting in the Triangle, most of the Christmas markets, the Illuminate Art Walk, the American Indian Heritage Celebration, the Lake Myra lights in Wendell, and the Raleigh Christmas Parade itself.

You can fill most of a season without spending much.

Practical Notes

Downtown parking on parade day fills early. Get there well ahead or plan to walk a distance.

The parade route is 1.4 miles, so there’s more viewing space than people assume. Spots further from the start are usually less crowded.

Dress for standing around. A November morning in Raleigh can go either direction.

Weeknights beat weekends for the Lantern Festival and most ticketed events.

If You’re New Here

Holiday season is one of the better times to get a feel for the Triangle, because the towns put their personalities on display. The small-town parades and tree lightings tell you more about a place than a drive-through on a Tuesday.

For the rest of the year, I’ve written up North Raleigh parks and greenways, the restaurant scene, and fall events.
